Title Design Research: The Number 23

The third movie is The Number 23. It is two minutes and 41 seconds. It is thriller and we used the https://www.watchthetitles.com/ website.

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

Eleven titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film. They include Design & Production, IF Creative Director, IF Director/Art Director, IF Producer, IF Designer, IF 2D Animator, IF Editor, IF Flame Artist, and IF Coordinator. It also included the Production Company and the Director of the film.

2. What connotations do the images carry?

The connotations the images carry are very crime-related. It gives a sense of mystery, and the typewriter-style of the lettering makes it seem like an investigation of some kind is going to take place. As the titles go on, the images start to get a bit messier and more chaotic. This brings out more of an unsettling vibe/connotation. The blood that then starts to cover the “paper” continues to suggest a darker connotation the film’s story.

3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The genre is symbolized through the elements included throughout the title sequence. Elements like the dulled down and dark coloring give the gloomier and suspenseful mood. The dripping blood bleeding onto the paper is what really gives the needed sense of horror that hints at the genre of the film being a thriller. The glitches between the different titles just add to the uneasy feeling you get from watching them and it seems to be made to make the audience uncomfortable.

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The director of the film said they wanted to emphasize the repetition of the number 23 throughout history. They wanted the audience to feel uncomfortable. By creating tension with the titles, they hoped for the audience to pick up on the hints suggesting it was not going to be a tame movie. They challenged conventions by trying to use a title sequence that wasn’t too complex, but still trying to get it to tell a story. When the name of the movie is finally shown at the end, it spelled out in a barely noticeable and dark silhouette of the number “23” on a paper that is completely drenched in blood. This definitely gives the title sequence an appropriate end to introduce the thrilling story of the film.
